More to report Saturday June

Yesterday as we left Hinkley we were full of hope. We would almost certainly be in Chareston today. Well we all have our dreams. When we arrived at the anchorage just north of Skull Creek Marina we opened up the motor to find it soaked with salt water and lots of salt water in the bilge. So much for Charleston.

Last night Trish and I debated on what to do without coming up with any kind of an answer. When I awoke it seemed clear that no matter what we did it was owing to be up to us to find the leak. After breakfast I opened up the motor and the laserette. While Trish drove I looked for the water source.

This was not an easy task, but after a couple of hours in the Port Royal Sound we have come to some conclusions. First the water does not flow until we get up to something like 2400 RPM. Second it is coming from the rear. Somewhere behind the aft companion way. I believe it can be only two causes. First a leak in the exhaust hose or second a leak at the rudder post. There is a sea chest at the aft end, but no sign of water.

Since neither of the possible problems can be solved by Trish, Kelly and myself at 11:30 we turned back towards Savannah and Hinkley. High tide is 12:30 so this timing puts under The Hilton Head Bridge at high tide. Discretion still is the better part of valor, so we have anchored for lunch and will go under at about 2:00.

  1. Hello Bill.Trish and Kelly- Life is interesting on a boat! You have had your share of challenges.

Don't lose hope as a fix must be just around the corner. It is sometimes the most obvious that is overlooked. A few seasons ago I saw that a lot of water was accumulating below the engine [this was just after spring launch]. I drained the area but could not see a source of the water. It was only while the engine was running that I discovered that I had not closed one of the engine heat exchanger drain cocks completely. It was the one leading to the heat exchanger. I always open in the fall to make sure the lay up anti freeze has made it to the exchanger.

I have also seen a leak in the raw water pump as the unit will eventually give out. There was an excellent mechanic that solved a starter motor problem for us. He was recommended by the Isle of Hope Marina. He solved what 3 before him couldn't. Do not know if he is still around. Lots of experience on big ocean going yachts. Wishing you all the best!
