Irish Mist III goes into the water

On Wednesday April 24th 2013 our new boat was put into the water. After a little trouble with the centre board it was take my me to a temporary slip. i should note that during the docking no buddy was hurt and the yacht got no scratches. While the mooring was good to excellent the filming of the launching is anything but. i am still having trouble learning how to use my new Gopro camera.

Since we were in Rochester Trish and i did not get to inspect Pipe Dream last week, but i hear she is progressing and will be ready for launch in two weeks.

We are bringing IM III to Toronto on Friday and Saturday. I hope to get lots of pictures and will post them here.

Fish in the River or no fish in the River

I have just realized that the fish videos were marked private. If you go on now you will see the fish in the Humber River just north of the Bloor Street and the Old Mill Station for the Bloor Subway.

Saying goodbye to Charlie

In 1989 Charlie Plaxton and I bout a C&C 27 calling her Irish Mist. for the next 5 years Charlie and I along with crew races her in about 50 races or regattas a year. Charlie's funeral was held in Kingston last Tuesday. Trish and I left Rochester Monday, but rather then head west and home we turned east towards Gananoque and on to Kingston the next day.

Gananoque is about half an hour from Kingston and the center of the Thousand Islands where we spend 2 to 4 weeks each year on Irish Mist. The following pictures are the view from our room and loooking up and down the St Lawrence River.

Finally Irish Mist III Prepares for launch

Last Saturday Trish and I went to Rochester. We left Saturday because the weatherman said that Sunday was to be to best day of the week. It turned out that Monday was actually the best.

Irish Mist  is a large yacht with a number of systems we are not use to. We figure it will take some time to be comfortable with everything. Last week the things we needed to work did. Our only problem so far is the Fusion Stereo System which will not turn on.

We did get the dogger up, the tarp and frame down and loaded the anchors. The davits went on very easily as did the wheel and mount for the chart plotter. Trish and I have the added complication that several items where lowered or dismantled for the trip from Annapolis. I have included some pictures to show the progress, but with the tarp frame and tender on deck it is not a pretty site.

First Pipe Dream

On April 12 Trish, my sisters and I went out to inspect Pipe Dream. The hull is now grey having had primmer applied. The bright work is starting to look great after 5 coats.

Bruckmanns have reached a point where the work does not show like it did a month ago. In a months time she will be finished in the water and ready to go for a sail. At this point you just don't see it.

Fish in the River

First let me say the main purpose of this post is to learn how to use my new Gopro Camera. The auxiliary benefit is we all get to see Steelhead Trout jump almost 5 feet out of the Humber River in Toronto.

Last week Trish and I went see the fish running up the river, but no fish. I did a little research and found they jump in the afternoon with the best time around 4:00.

These pictures were taken Saturday April 6, 2013 around 3:30. I edited the movie to shorten it then put most of it in slow motion so as you could actually see the fish jump. I hope you enjoy it. I do have to say it is better in person, so if you get a chance to witness the event somewhere in the world please do.

The Absent Fish

The Steelheads or Rainbow Trout are swimming upstream in the Humber River which flows through Toronto. Last weekend they where running, but it has gotten a little bit colder and yesterday when Trish and I went over to the dam they were not jumping. The fish should continue their fight upstream for about another week.  We will try to get a picture of them jumping over this metre and a half or about 5 foot dam.
